Karma Yoga in London
As many of you know, I head-up the Karma Yoga London movement, which encourages yogis in London to take their yoga practice off the mat and more selflessly serve the welfare of the world. Through a few fundraising events and classes, we have supported both local and international organisations. It is so inspiring to be part of this community, and it has helped me become aware of the ever-growing number of yoga teachers and students across London who are doing their part to give back to their communities through yoga. I though it would be helpful to compile a little directory of charity-based yoga classes in London, which I've started below. Please add a comment if you know of similar classes that I've overlooked, and I'll add them to the list.
Charity Classes Based in Studios
Yogarise Peckham: Fridays 11:30am-12:30pm. A rota of teachers move through this slot, which runs on a donation-basis, and all money is donated to charity of the studio's choice each month.
Yotopia: Wednesdays 2-3pm. Josephine McGraill teaches this donation based class, which raises money to support a family she stayed with in Nepal who were impacted by the earthquake there last year. You can learn more about her work on her facebook page.
Yogahaven: Sundays 3:30-4:30pm in both Islington and Clapham. A rota of teachers move through this slot, and all money is donated to charity.
Lumi Power Yoga: Sundays 2-3:15pm. Various teachers from the studio's teacher training programme teach this class, and all money raised goes to the West London Action for Children.
Classes that give back to the community
Supply Yoga: Classes in a range of East London locations, either donation based or a set rate of £10. Supply yoga is a social enterprise; the money you spend on a yoga class at Supply will fund their work with third sector partners, organisations that support some of the most vulnerable people in the community.
Other Charitable Yoga Organisations in London
Dead Yogis Society: Organises charity classes every couple of months, usually team-taught by London-based Rocket yoga teachers, raising money for a range of charities.
What have I missed? Let me know and I'll add it to the list! "Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world...Do your work with the welfare of others always in mind."
